Press Start: my journey as a gamer and dad

Welcome to Dadventure Quest, where parenting and gaming unite in an epic adventure! This is the start of a journey focused on finding balance between responsibilities, having fun, and forging unique connections—both with our children and our inner gamer.

I am Dadventure Quest, a gaming dad with a passion for games and exploring new horizons, both on-screen and in parenting. The idea for Dadventure Quest came to life when I realized how much my love for gaming parallels the challenges of fatherhood. In both, you face quests that prepare you for what's ahead, encounter unexpected side missions, and sometimes, the final boss is a toddler with a strong will of their own.

Why gaming and parenting go hand in hand

When you look closely, gaming and parenting have a lot in common: Every day is a new challenge: Whether it’s climbing the spire in Slay the Spire, where each level presents new obstacles and surprises, or dealing with a tantrum over a lost stuffed animal, both require flexibility, patience, and a keen eye for what lies ahead. Just as you carefully choose cards to progress in the game, parenting involves weighing your actions and reactions, learning from mistakes, and sometimes starting fresh with a new approach.

Teamwork leads to success: Co-op isn’t just for video games. Take Cat Quest, where collaboration is key to defeating enemies and solving puzzles. Similarly, parenting is about planning together, supporting each other, and enjoying the journey as you tackle challenges side by side.

You grow through experience: Just like in a RPG where every failed attempt teaches you something and every victory makes you stronger, parenting is about earning ‘parenting points’ by trying, learning, and continuously challenging yourself.

The beginning of my adventure

My first adventure began with a Gameboy Advance and Pokémon Crystal. Every route I walked was filled with anticipation, wondering what I’d encounter next. I didn’t progress quickly at first—my Totodile evolved eventually into Feraligatr before I even reached the first Gym. But isn’t that just like parenting? We often stumble and over-prepare, only to find our rhythm later. Trading Pokémon with friends and battling via the iconic link cables taught me not just strategy but also the joy of sharing experiences—something I now cherish when gaming with my own family.

Later, my parents gifted me an original Xbox, where I spent countless hours playing RalliSport Challenge with my dad. It wasn’t just a game; it was a bridge that brought us closer, each race a shared experience that lingers in my memory. These are the kinds of moments I hope to pass on to my daughter. Together, we play simple, interactive games like Alba: A Wildlife Adventure and Hidden Cats. It’s not about high scores or speedrunning—it’s about exploring together, embracing the journey, and finding joy in the little moments along the way.
